Carl Evans – SMI’s Manufacturing & Supply Director

We’re delighted to announce that we have promoted Carl Evans to Manufacturing and Supply Director and asked him to join SMI’s board. Carl joined SMI in 2018 as Head of Manufacturing to manage our production facility and supervise all plant operations. He achieved consistently high levels of manufacturing productivity, safety and quality. In this newly created role, Carl will be responsible for realising the additional efficiency gains available through lean manufacturing. His initial focus will be on creating greater alignment between our supply chain and manufacturing operations, as well as the introduction of further automation into our manufacturing processes.

SMI has grown year on year for the last eight years, achieving increased turnover in 2020 and 2021 despite the global pandemic. Operating globally across Defence, Energy, Aerospace and Transport sectors, the company remains on course for tenfold growth in ten years. Recently, Carl has been instrumental in managing the opening of our second site in Andover. Our stores have transferred to these new premises, which is enabling us to extend and develop the manufacturing facilities at our primary site to facilitate additional technical capability and output capacity. As a board member, Carl will represent our combined supply and manufacturing operation, extending the perspectives and expertise available around the table and bringing a welcome new balance to our decision making.

“Carl has made a huge contribution to SMI since he joined and his promotion is thoroughly merited.

Close coordination of supply and manufacturing is vital to efficiency and the ability to deliver our business growth target. Carl will deliver day to day oversight, ensuring productivity and safety, as well as the ‘fit and forget’ product quality our customers turn to us for.

He also has the skills and experience required to make a valuable contribution to our strategic planning, supporting our ongoing success.”
