As members of the SMI team gathered this week in Canberra for the Submarine Institute of Australia’s 11th Biennial Conference, our CEO Jenny Shaw was at Australia House in London for the launch of the Global Executive MBA: Defence and Space by the University of South Australia.

The first programme of its kind in that part of the world, the MBA aims to provide a critical development pathway for Australia’s defence industry, leveraging the recent growth of two key sectors and the AUKUS strategic alliance. Starting in late 2023, the 18-month programme will endeavour to seek solutions to the most pressing challenges facing the defence and space sectors.

How Will SMI Support the Programme?

With international partners in Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom, the Global Executive MBA will feature different training styles to work effectively overseas, including online study as well as face-to-face residential teaching in the capitals with a selection of hand-picked students. A key international partner, SMI has been supplying the Collins class submarine for many years and is ready to provide fit and forget submarine cable systems to the Hunter class frigates too. We have been supporting submarine programmes for three decades and with a track record of more than ten thousand cable solution installations with zero leaks we are proud to be lending our knowledge and expertise to the MBA programme.

Meanwhile, in Canberra, the SMI team attending SIA22 have been party to a wealth of debate and discussion under the conference theme of Nuclear Powered Australian Submarines – Challenges and Opportunities. Following the announcement of the AUKUS Agreement in 2021, agreeing to the acquisition by Australia of nuclear-powered submarines, the conference has been an important opportunity to discuss the unprecedented challenges for the Australian defence community associated with the decision to acquire and build nuclear-powered submarines.
