SMI Andover to Perth Challenge: Bangkok

SMI Andover to Perth, Bankok Map

We set out in May to walk, run, cycle or swim 9,000 miles – the equivalent of the distance between our UK and Australian offices – to raise money for Spinal Muscular Atrophy UK. We’ve now achieved 6,002 miles, which means we’ve made it to Bangkok.

It’s astonishing to think that one of our team members, Michel Renard, has single-handedly walked and run more than the equivalent of the distance between his home in Paris and Istanbul. The whole team has walked the distance between John O’Groats and Land’s End in the UK over four times.

We manufacture bespoke ‘fit and forget’ connector and cable solutions for rail customers and worked with InfraAsia, a railway consulting practice with offices in Bangkok, to supply our ‘Self-Testing Current Rail Indicator Device’ to its regional clients.

With that and our milestone in mind, we thought we’d take a look at what’s happening in the rail industry in Thailand. The simple answer is a lot!

Later this year, the ‘Bang Sue Grand Central Station’ will open its doors in Bangkok. The same size as 40 football pitches, the Thai government expects this huge new city centre transport hub to help solve the traffic woes of one of the world’s most congested cities.

Complementing this investment, 2,000km of new rail infrastructure is being constructed, including several new ‘high-speed’ lines. As part of this work, a 5.2km railway tunnel has just been completed, which is now the country’s longest tunnel. That project is part of a new high-speed line that will connect Bangkok with the far North East of the country.

Thai media recently said that “the future of train travel in Thailand has never looked brighter” and it’s only possible to agree with them.
