SMI Rallies to Continue Key Work for Ministry of Defence

SMI (SMI), has responded to the government’s call for support during the coronavirus crisis.

The company which designs and manufactures fit-and-forget pressure moulded cable systems for use in critical infrastructure across defence, energy, aerospace and transport sectors. Identified by the Ministry of Defence as a critical supplier to the Royal Navy, SMI was asked to continue its manufacturing throughout the current period in support of national defence and the fight against the coronavirus.

With uninterrupted manufacturing, the team at SMI has had to adapt operations to support safety and social distancing with extended hygiene measures across the business. Those who can work from home are doing so and the factory teams have been reconfigured and retrained to ensure that production can be carried out as safely as possible.

SMI Continue to Produce Through Hull Penetrating Glands

SMI are the only company in the world approved to produce through Hull Penetrating Glands, something they’ve been doing for 25 years.

Demand for SMI’s products is set to grow in 2021-22 and the company has been working with both the local MP, Kit Malthouse, and the Ministry of Defence to expedite programmes in 2020 ahead of the coming demand. Being able to continue that work during the current crisis has been hugely important.

At a time when many companies are being forced to make cuts across their business SMI are recruiting. Several new starters joining during the COVID lockdown and they have several current opportunities which can be accessed on their vacancies page.

The materials demand that SMI’s activity has created has flowed down the supply chain enabling other manufacturers not only to remain open as key workers but also to de-furlough some staff.
