Wave and Tidal Energy Cable Systems
Reliable offshore performance
Wave and tidal energy generation promise predictability in output that wind will never be able to offer. However, like wind, wave and tidal platforms have to operate in extremely hostile offshore conditions, with subsea cables exposed to significant forces and being hard to access for repairs and maintenance. Operators are increasingly aware of the economic benefits of reliable, high performance cable systems.
Cable systems, wet and deck mate connectors and glands solutions
Drawing on SMI’s heritage of manufacturing cable systems for submarines, we have been able to apply our expertise to the world of offshore renewables, including fit and forget data, power and control cabling. Using our thermoplastic moulding techniques, SMI has delivered long term reliability to wave and tidal projects across the globe. We have supplied both wave and tidal projects in Scotland, Pembrokeshire, Normandy and Cape Sharp in Canada.
These projects have spanned cable systems, wet and deck mate connectors and glands for:
- LV auxiliary power
- MV power at 6.6 and 13.8 kV
- Fibre optic connectors with 12 or 24 fibres contacts
- Unique MV and Fibre Optic Hybrid Wet Mate
All have been installed and worked first time – fit and forget.
