Wind power is a significant source of renewable energy, especially in the UK, where it is the second largest source of power. Wind’s contribution to Net Zero policies is continuing to grow, with large new installations regularly coming online. Offshore wind installations have specific challenges around the hostility of the marine environment, as well their relative inaccessibility for maintenance. Without careful design and materials selection, performance can rapidly degrade and costs mount.
SMI has been manufacturing subsea cabling for three decades. An offshore wind turbine’s power and control systems, fibre optic sensors and monitoring systems all require cabling and connections that are built to withstand the worst the ocean can throw at them. This is a product challenge that our experience supplying the Royal Navy’s submarine fleet has amply qualified us to meet.
