Enriched Opportunities for Apprentices with SMI

SMI (SMI) are taking the opportunity in National Apprentice Week to refresh and extend their apprenticeship offering. The company, which is the leading designer and manufacturer of cable systems for hostile environments, has run its apprentice scheme for the last decade with participants going on to roles in production leadership, engineering, and quality assurance.

The enhanced programme will be structured with a first year in which each apprentice will attend college one day per week whilst being trained on core skills. They will also spend time in all departments to learn the full range of business activities and develop their teamwork. Internal workshops and regular monthly 1:1s will provide the opportunity to talk about their skills and development, as will onsite reviews with their tutor.

Innovation, Development and Excellence

Innovation, development and excellence form the backbone of the SMI technical ethos and so each candidate will also be assigned an Engineer mentor.

In years 2 and 3 each apprentice will continue their college studies and will also undertake a project, spend an extended period in a department of special interest to them and they’ll also get involved in other activities such as recruitment fairs and exhibitions.

Catherine Jennings, Head of People, said “We are very proud of the successful apprentice programme at SMI. Expanding the scope of the scheme and the addition of new apprentices in 2020 will deliver new talent, supporting our growth and success”.
