The US, UK and Australia have unveiled details of their plan to create a new fleet of nuclear-powered submarines, aimed at countering China’s influence in the Indo-Pacific region.  Under the AUKUS pact Australia is to get its first nuclear-powered subs – at least three – from the US.

Speaking from San Diego, USA  yesterday, the three premiers announced that from 2027, the US and UK will also base a small number of nuclear submarines in Perth, Western Australia (home to SMI Pty), and an entirely new nuclear-powered submarine for the UK and Australian navies will be designed and built – a model that is being called SSN-AUKUS. This attack craft will be built in Britain and Australia to a British design, but use technology from all three countries.

We welcome the AUKUS announcement, SMI CEO Jenny Shaw said: “SMI has been providing fit and forget cable systems that form the central nervous system of UK and Australian Submarines for three decades. We look forward to supporting the AUKUS programme from our locations in all three countries. SSN-AUKUS represents an opportunity to deliver world-leading technology from sovereign capability.”

Construction will start on the UK’s SNN-AUKUS submarines towards the end of this decade. The UK’s SSN-AUKUS submarines will be built by BAE Systems and Rolls-Royce. Once they are operational, the UK’s new SSN-AUKUS submarines will replace the current Astute-Class submarines. The first UK submarines will be delivered in the late 2030s and Australian submarines early 2040s.
